Upcoming Destination Workshops
Whidbey island plein air | july 16-19, 2018
During this comprehensive landscape class both plein air and studio painting will be thoroughly discussed. Often work created in the studio can lack the energy of paintings created outdoors from direct observation. TJ will give daily plein air demonstrations and individual attention to each student over this four-day workshop. We will spend our time outdoors painting Whidbey Island landscape, barns, buildings, boats and more.
bozeman, montana plein air | july 9-12 2018
The city of Bozeman is surrounded by six mountain ranges and lots of wildlife – the northern entrance to Yellowstone National Park is just a little over an hour south.
TJ Cunningham will begin each day with a demonstration as he talks his way through his painting process. This will give attendees clear instruction in simplifying the landscape in an expressive way. Paint quality, value pattern, and abstraction will all be discussed as valuable tools when used in landscape painting. Following the demonstration, students will be free to choose a scene that interests them and spend the rest of the day painting while TJ teaches one on one.
washington dc plein air | September 21-24, 2018
The focus of this workshop is learning to see reflected light and color in landscape painting. Working from life, TJ Cunningham will demonstrate his process during daily demonstrations and then assist attendees as they complete their own paintings. This focused, four day workshop will be conducted outdoors at various wooded sites in the Broadlands neighborhood of Ashburn, VA. We will locate close to amenities and parking. All levels of experience are welcome. Composition, drawing, and basic value and color distribution will all be discussed.
Hilton Head Landscape Workshop | november 12 -14, 2018
This workshop will give attendees the opportunity to explore landscape painting from the studio. TJ Cunningham has spent hundreds of hours outdoors painting from life and will show students how to create an authentic painting by interpreting rather than copying a photograph. Design, color and paint quality are just a few of the ideas that will be presented as tools that can bring a landscape painting to life.
